Williams had an extensive career as a manager, winning pennants in both leagues in addition to the World Series titles.

 

He joined Oakland as manager in 1971, when the A's won 101 games before losing the American League Championship Series. But they won the World Series in each of the next two seasons, beating the Cincinnati Reds in '72 and the New York Mets in '73.

 

Williams went on to manage the California Angels (1974-76), Montreal Expos (1977-81), and San Diego Padres (1982-85), whom he guided to the NL pennant in 1984.
